The BCCI has updated the playing conditions for IPL 2025. Captains will now receive demerit points instead of match bans for slow over-rates.
IPL 2025: New Over-Rate Penalty System
At a recent meeting in Mumbai, the BCCI informed franchises that captains will no longer face suspensions for slow over-rates. Instead, they will get demerit points, valid for three years.
Level 1 offences result in fines of 25% to 75% of match fees, plus demerit points. More serious Level 2 offences lead to four demerit points.
“If a captain gets four demerit points, the match referee may impose a penalty like a 100% fine or extra points. A match ban is possible but only in extreme cases,” a source said.
Previously, captains like Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya faced bans for over-rate violations. Under the new rules, Pandya would not have been banned for Mumbai Indians’ opening match in IPL 2025.
Impact Player Rule Extended Until 2027
The Impact Player Rule, which allows mid-match substitutions, will stay until 2027 despite debates over its impact.
IPL 2025: DRS Expanded for Wides
Players can now challenge umpire calls on wides, including height-based and off-stump wides. This extends the 2024 rule allowing reviews for wides and no-balls.
IPL 2025: Other Key Updates
