In a major decision ahead of IPL 2025, the BCCI has lifted the ban on saliva use and introduced a second ball for the second innings of night matches. IPL captains and managers finalized these changes during a meeting at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai on March 20.

Second Ball Rule to Counter Dew Factor

The second ball will come into play from the 11th over of the second innings. This rule aims to reduce the impact of dew, which often gives an advantage to teams batting second in night games. By introducing a fresh ball mid-innings, the BCCI hopes to balance the contest and minimize the influence of the toss.

A source at the meeting stated that umpires will determine whether to use the second ball based on match conditions. This rule will primarily apply to night games, while afternoon matches are unlikely to see a ball change.

Saliva Ban Lifted After Players’ Appeal

The ICC initially imposed the saliva ban during the COVID-19 pandemic as a health precaution. However, with the pandemic now behind us, many cricketers, including Mohammed Shami, have urged authorities to remove the restriction to aid swing and reverse swing.

Shami, along with Vernon Philander and Tim Southee, pushed for lifting the ban. The BCCI has now acknowledged their concerns, allowing fast bowlers to use saliva to maintain ball movement.

Impact on IPL 2025

These rule changes introduce a new strategic layer to IPL matches. The second-ball rule will test captains’ adaptability, while saliva use will help bowlers maintain ball condition. This ensures more competitive matches.

With these innovations, IPL 2025 promises an exciting season for players and fans alike.
