Australia Thrash Sri Lanka by Nine Wickets to Seal 2-0 Series Win

Galle, Sri Lanka – Australia delivered a commanding performance in the second Test at Galle, defeating Sri Lanka by nine wickets to clinch a 2-0 series whitewash. The visitors needed just 75 runs on Day 4 after dismantling Sri Lanka’s batting lineup early in the morning session. Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head made light work of the chase, wrapping up the victory in just 18 overs.

The win was built on the brilliance of Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann, who both picked up four wickets in Sri Lanka’s second innings, complementing their three-wicket hauls from the first innings. Their relentless bowling ensured that Australia remained in complete control throughout the match.

Lyon, Kuhnemann Dominate as Sri Lanka Crumbles

Resuming on 231/9, Sri Lanka’s slim hopes rested on Kusal Mendis, but Lyon quickly ended his resistance with a sharp-turning delivery that forced a miscued pull shot straight to short fine leg. Lahiru Kumara briefly entertained with a boundary off Kuhnemann, but Beau Webster struck with his very first ball to dismiss him, wrapping up the innings in less than six overs.

Despite a couple of unsuccessful DRS reviews and an overturned slip catch, Australia’s spinners ensured that Sri Lanka had no breathing room, restricting them to 231 all out.

Australia’s Chase: A Walk in the Park

With just 75 runs needed, Sri Lanka’s spinners attempted to make early inroads. Nishan Peiris found sharp turn and bounce to trouble Travis Head, but the left-hander responded with a classy drive through extra cover. Ramesh Mendis momentarily unsettled Usman Khawaja, but his attempt to overcompensate resulted in three full deliveries, all dispatched to the boundary.

Prabath Jayasuriya provided the only breakthrough for Sri Lanka, getting Head caught behind, but it was too little, too late. Labuschagne and Khawaja calmly steered Australia to victory, with the winning runs fittingly coming off Dimuth Karunaratne, who was playing his 100th and final Test match.

With this dominant win, Australia continues to assert their supremacy in Test cricket, while Sri Lanka will have to reflect on their struggles and rebuild for future challenges.

Match Summary:

Sri Lanka: 257 & 231 (Angelo Mathews 76, Kusal Mendis 50; Matthew Kuhnemann 4-63, Nathan Lyon 4-84)
Australia: 414 & 75/1 (Alex Carey 156, Steve Smith 131; Prabath Jayasuriya 5-151)
