Umpire Controversy in Australia vs Sri Lanka Test Review Decision Sparks Debate

Cricket fans were left baffled on Thursday as Sri Lanka had to review an on-field decision that many believed was a clear not-out call. The incident occurred during the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Galle when Kamindu Mendis was given out caught behind off Nathan Lyon’s delivery.

Umpire Joel Wilson raised his finger, seemingly awarding Lyon his 550th Test wicket, prompting Australian players to celebrate. However, Mendis, confident that he hadn’t edged the ball, opted for a review.

UltraEdge replays confirmed there was a significant gap between the bat and ball, with snicko showing no spike, leading to the decision being overturned. Although Mendis extended his stay at the crease, he was soon dismissed by Travis Head for 13 off 21 balls.

Wilson’s controversial decision drew sharp criticism from fans, with many taking to social media to express their frustration.

This latest umpiring controversy comes after Australia was denied a contentious catch during their final Test against India last month. Steve Smith had appeared to catch Virat Kohli’s edge before the ball seemingly touched the ground. However, as the third umpire for the match, Wilson ruled the catch invalid.

Additionally, Wilson had another key decision overturned during the Boxing Day Test when Yashasvi Jaiswal’s edge off Pat Cummins to Alex Carey was initially given not out. Despite visible deviation in the ball’s flight path, technology did not show a spike on snicko, leading to heated debate among players and analysts.

Despite the controversy, Sri Lanka finished Day One at 229-9, with Kusal Mendis (59) and Lahiru Kumara (0) still at the crease.
