The sound of whistling may be synonymous with the Super Kings franchise, but in Centurion on Wednesday, it was drowned out by another familiar occurrence—Joburg Super Kings (JSK) falling short of a place in the SA20 final.
Despite making it to the eliminator with a mixed bag of performances—three whistle-backed victories at the Wanderers, a crucial win in Kingsmead, and five losses—JSK once again found themselves on the wrong side of history against Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC), the reigning champions of the first two editions.
A Familiar Story of Missed Opportunities
JSK’s playoff woes continued, reminiscent of their past eliminations. In 2023, SEC knocked them out at Centurion with Aiden Markram’s 100 trumping Reeza Hendricks’ 96. A year earlier, Durban’s Super Giants ended their campaign at the Wanderers, thanks to Heinrich Klaasen’s brutal 74 off 30 balls.
On Wednesday, Markram was again the architect of JSK’s downfall. Walking in at 67/3 in the eighth over, he played a composed yet effective knock, scoring 63* off 40 balls. His partnerships—56 off 43 with Tristan Stubbs and 53 off 24 with Marco Jansen—powered SEC to a competitive total of 184/6. Though Markram’s innings wasn’t explosive, more than half of his runs came from boundaries, showcasing his knack for calculated aggression.
JSK’s Bowling Nightmare: Sipamla’s Forgettable Spell
Lutho Sipamla, who had been one of JSK’s most reliable bowlers in the tournament, had a nightmare outing. Conceding 72 runs in his four overs, he delivered the second-most expensive spell in SA20 history. Five of SEC’s eight sixes came off his bowling, including a brutal 19th over where Jansen took him for 21 runs. Despite the hammering, head coach Stephen Fleming backed the pacer, praising his performances throughout the season.
Bairstow’s Brief Fireworks Amidst JSK’s Batting Collapse
Chasing 185, JSK’s innings never gained momentum. Reduced to 91/5 after 13 overs, the pressure was on Jonny Bairstow to stage a miraculous comeback. The Englishman briefly ignited hope with a blistering 37 off 17 balls, including two massive sixes off Liam Dawson. However, his dismissal—bowled trying to repeat a slog—left JSK needing 69 off 31 deliveries, sealing their fate.
SEC triumphed by 32 runs, earning another shot at a final berth against Paarl Royals on Thursday. As for JSK, the wait for a maiden SA20 title continues.
