MI Cape Town’s Remarkable Turnaround: How SA20’s Biggest Underdogs Became Table-Toppers

The unpredictability of the SA20 continues to surprise as MI Cape Town, a team that finished last in both 2023 and 2024, has emerged at the top of the standings this season. In contrast, the previous two runners-up, Pretoria Capitals and Durban’s Super Giants, find themselves at the bottom.

The Key to Cape Town’s Turnaround

Only five players from MI Cape Town’s struggling squads of the past two years remain: Delano Potgieter, Ryan Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen, Dewald Brevis, and Kagiso Rabada. In contrast, Pretoria Capitals and Durban’s Super Giants retained eight players across all three seasons, possibly indicating that a fresh approach can be the key to success.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC), winners of the first two SA20 tournaments, had a strong retention strategy as well, keeping 10 out of 18 players from their original squad in 2024. However, only six of them featured in this year’s lineup. Their performance dipped slightly this season, winning half their matches and securing third place. But considering they won the title from the same position in 2023 with just four victories, history suggests they remain a threat.

Does Captaincy Influence Performance?

The impact of leadership changes in SA20 appears inconclusive. Pretoria Capitals shifted from Wayne Parnell in the first two seasons to a shared captaincy between Rilee Rossouw and Kyle Verreynne this year. Durban’s Super Giants saw Quinton de Kock lead them to second-last in 2023, while Keshav Maharaj took them to the final in 2024, only to oversee a disappointing campaign this year. MI Cape Town’s leadership also fluctuated, with Rashid Khan captaining in 2023, Kieron Pollard stepping in due to Rashid’s injury in 2024, and Rashid reclaiming his role in 2025. The only stable leadership has been at Sunrisers Eastern Cape, where Aiden Markram has led throughout.

Coaching and Squad Depth: The Real Game Changers

Adrian Birrell (SEC) and Robin Peterson (MI Cape Town) have remained in charge since the inaugural season. However, Pretoria Capitals moved from Graham Ford to Jonathan Trott, possibly affecting their consistency.

For MI Cape Town, the addition of seasoned players like Dane Piedt, Colin Ingram, and Trent Boult provided stability and leadership. Peterson credited these experienced cricketers for fostering a winning mentality. Piedt, despite only playing one game, significantly impacted the team’s energy and morale.

“The guys want to win, they support each other, and they take nothing for granted,” Peterson emphasized. “Players like Piedt bring energy even from the bench, uplifting the squad’s spirit.”

Pretoria Capitals’ Struggles and The Road Ahead

Pretoria’s disappointing campaign saw Keegan Lion-Cachet, a newcomer, front the press after their 95-run defeat to MI Cape Town.

“Cricket is unpredictable, and unfortunately, things didn’t go our way this tournament,” he said. “We have a lot to learn and improve next year.”

The question now is whether Pretoria will make strategic changes or stick to their core squad for another year.

The Final Stretch: What’s Next?

MI Cape Town faces Paarl Royals in Qualifier 1, with the winner securing a direct spot in the final. The losing team will get a second shot against the winner of the Eliminator between Joburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

As MI Cape Town trained under the fading Table Mountain sun after their dominant win, the sound of bat meeting ball spoke volumes about their hunger to lift the SA20 trophy.
