England’s Struggles with the Pitch and Early Dismissals
The visitors faced difficulties in timing their shots, as some deliveries came off slow while others bounced unexpectedly. The first major setback came in the ninth over when a mix-up between Ben Duckett and Phil Salt led to the latter’s unfortunate run-out. Salt was already halfway down the pitch when Duckett sent him back, resulting in a crucial early wicket.
Harshit Rana’s Eventful ODI Debut
Debutant pacer Harshit Rana had an eventful start, conceding 11 runs in his first over but bouncing back with a maiden in his second. He consistently bowled short, extracting extra bounce, but Salt took him apart in the sixth over, smashing three sixes and two boundaries. However, Rana made a strong comeback later, dismissing Duckett with the help of a brilliant running catch from Yashasvi Jaiswal. He also removed Harry Brook, thanks to a sharp take by KL Rahul behind the stumps.
Root and Buttler Stabilize, But Jadeja Strikes
Joe Root and Jos Buttler attempted to rebuild the innings, handling India’s left-arm spinners well. Root was particularly effective at disturbing the bowlers’ lengths, skillfully alternating between backfoot strokes and reverse sweeps. However, his innings was cut short at 19 when a quicker delivery from Ravindra Jadeja trapped him leg-before.
Despite losing wickets early, Buttler and Bethell steadied England’s innings with a crucial 59-run partnership for the fifth wicket. While Jadeja was difficult to score against, Axar Patel was managed through singles. Buttler reached his 27th ODI fifty in the 31st over but departed soon after, mistiming a sweep off Axar to square leg.
Livingstone’s Impatience, Bethell’s Grit, and Archer’s Late Flourish
Liam Livingstone, struggling to rotate the strike, attempted an aggressive shot after a series of dot balls and edged Rana to the keeper. With England at 183/6 in the 36th over, Bethell took charge, rotating the strike alongside Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid. However, his stay ended when he missed a slog-sweep off Jadeja and was trapped LBW.
Jofra Archer, unfazed by the situation, played an aggressive cameo. He hammered two boundaries and a six in a single over against Hardik Pandya, scoring a valuable 21 runs to push England to a competitive total of 248.
Brief Scores:
England – 248 (Jos Buttler 52, Jacob Bethell 51; Ravindra Jadeja 3-26, Harshit Rana 3-53) vs India.
