England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler has announced that he will step down from the role at the end of the team’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. The 34-year-old revealed his decision in Karachi ahead of England’s final group-stage match against South Africa.

Buttler’s Emotional Statement on Resignation

Speaking at a press conference on February 28, Buttler described the decision as the right step for both himself and the team, hoping that a new leader can drive England’s white-ball resurgence alongside Brendon McCullum.

“I believe it’s the right time for me and the team. Hopefully, someone else can take the reins and work with Baz [McCullum] to restore England to the top,” he stated.

England’s Challenging Run in White-Ball Cricket

England’s exit from the Champions Trophy 2025 followed defeats against Australia and Afghanistan, continuing a difficult run in ODI cricket. Leading into the tournament, they had also suffered a 3-0 series loss against India, raising concerns about their form.

Buttler acknowledged that results played a key role in his decision.

“This tournament was crucial for my captaincy. Unfortunately, with the recent results and past tournaments, I feel I have reached the end of my journey as captain,” he admitted.

Buttler’s Leadership Legacy

Buttler took over as England’s white-ball captain after Eoin Morgan’s retirement in 2022 and led the team to T20 World Cup glory in Australia the same year. However, England faced challenges afterward:

  • 2023 ODI World Cup: Group-stage exit
  • 2024 T20 World Cup: Semi-final loss to India
  • 2025 Champions Trophy: Group-stage exit

In an effort to revamp England’s approach, Brendon McCullum was appointed as head coach for both red and white-ball teams in 2025. However, the transition period proved challenging, with England securing just one win in their last ten white-ball matches.

Tactical Challenges During Buttler’s Tenure

One of the major talking points under Buttler’s captaincy was England’s aggressive batting approach, which often brought mixed results. While England’s fearless brand of cricket won them the 2022 T20 World Cup, consistency in ODI cricket became an issue.

Key tactical challenges England faced:
✅ Struggled to adapt to slower subcontinental pitches
✅ Frequent batting collapses in high-pressure games
✅ Limited success in building strong middle-order partnerships
✅ Over-reliance on senior players instead of grooming younger talent

Despite these setbacks, Buttler’s leadership remained admired for his calm approach and backing of his players.

Fans React to Buttler’s Decision

England fans have shown mixed emotions about Buttler’s resignation. Some supporters praised his World Cup-winning achievements, while others believed the team needed a fresh start.

🔹 @CricketFan99: “Sad to see Buttler step down, but he will always be remembered for leading us to T20 World Cup glory!”
🔹 @ENGCricketDieHard: “This decision was coming, but Buttler has been a great servant for English cricket. Wishing him the best!”
🔹 @SportsAnalyst2025: “Time for England to rebuild! Hope we find a strong captain who can take the team forward.”

McCullum’s Support for Buttler

England’s head coach Brendon McCullum lauded Buttler’s contribution and selfless decision.

“Jos has given everything to England’s white-ball cricket. People often forget he won a World Cup just two years ago. His decision to step aside is incredibly selfless, and he remains a key player for us,” McCullum said.

With Buttler stepping down, England will now look for a new captain to lead their white-ball transformation ahead of upcoming ICC tournaments.
