Afghanistan’s Semi-Final Hopes Dashed by Rain

Afghanistan’s aspirations for redemption against Australia in a 50-over ICC event were washed away as rain halted play after just 12.5 overs of Australia’s chase. With the fixture abandoned, Australia secured their spot in the semifinals alongside India and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s campaign now hangs by a thread, with their progression dependent on an improbable outcome in the South Africa vs. England fixture.

Head’s Blitz Puts Australia in Control Before Rain Intervenes

Before the weather took over, Travis Head launched a blistering assault on Afghanistan’s bowlers, racing to a quick-fire half-century. His aggressive approach, coupled with Matthew Short’s attacking start, put Australia in command early. Fazalhaq Farooqi struggled with his swing control, leaking 18 runs in his opening over. Azmatullah Omarzai and Farooqi’s next overs also proved expensive as Australia raced to 42/0 in just four overs while chasing 273.

Afghanistan’s fielding woes resurfaced as both openers received lifelines before Short eventually fell to Gulbadin Naib. Steve Smith walked in and made an immediate impact, dispatching his first two deliveries to the boundary. By the end of the PowerPlay, Australia had amassed 90/1—the highest in the tournament—exposing Afghanistan’s short-ball strategy, which conceded 48 runs off just 21 deliveries.

However, as Australia crossed the 100-run mark, showers interrupted play. Despite efforts to dry the field, persistent rain made further action impossible. Since Australia hadn’t completed 20 overs, the DLS method couldn’t be applied, resulting in the match being abandoned.

Afghanistan Show Grit with the Bat

Before the unfortunate conclusion, Afghanistan showcased their fighting spirit, a trait that had helped them stun England just days earlier. Their batting innings was a tale of resilience and recoveries.

Sediqullah Atal, Afghanistan’s top scorer, crafted a composed 85 off 95 balls, forming a solid opening stand with Ibrahim Zadran. However, Australia struck back through spin in the middle overs, triggering a mini-collapse that saw Zadran, Rahmat Shah, and others depart between overs 11 and 20. Afghanistan found stability through Atal and Hashmatullah Shahidi before another slump reduced them to 199/7 by the 40th over.

Just when they seemed to be in trouble, Azmatullah Omarzai played a crucial knock of 67 off 63 balls, pushing Afghanistan to a competitive 273. Captain Shahidi had banked on the pitch slowing down to aid his spinners in the second innings, but the rain robbed Afghanistan of that opportunity.

Brief Scores:

Afghanistan: 273 all out in 50 overs (Sediqullah Atal 85, Azmatullah Omarzai 67, Ibrahim Zadran 35; Ben Dwarshuis 3/47, Adam Zampa 2/48, Spencer Johnson 2/49)
Australia: 109/1 in 12.5 overs (Travis Head 59*, Steve Smith 17*; Gulbadin Naib 1/14). Match abandoned due to rain.
