Last month, when questioned about the much-debated new disciplinary and travel regulations for the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma had responded sharply, asking, “Who told you about this? Has it come from the official end? Has it come officially?” The India captain was also seen telling chief selector Ajit Agarkar that a discussion with BCCI officials was necessary.
Now, there will be no ambiguity. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially handed over the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to all players, covering aspects like travel, net sessions, luggage limits, and family accommodations. These guidelines, primarily focused on discipline, are deemed non-negotiable and were communicated to players during the third ODI in Ahmedabad.
The new rules take immediate effect, with implementation starting from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The team’s touring manager has been given the responsibility of ensuring strict compliance. The BCCI emphasized that these SOPs aim to “promote discipline, unity, and a positive team environment while maintaining professional standards and operational efficiency during tours.”
Key SOPs for Team India
Restriction on Personal Entourage
One of the most significant changes is the limitation on personal staff accompanying players during tours. The guidelines specify that “personal managers, chefs, assistants, and security personnel” are not permitted unless explicitly approved by the BCCI. Previously, players had extensive entourages, including cooks, nannies, and hairdressers, alongside family members. The BCCI has reinforced that this rule will be strictly enforced.
Family Visit Guidelines
A major change pertains to family members, particularly spouses. Players traveling abroad for over 45 days can have their partners and children (under 18) visit once per series (format-wise) for a maximum of two weeks. Given that the Champions Trophy lasts approximately four weeks, family visits will not be allowed during the tournament.
Team Travel Protocol
Players will now be required to travel via team buses rather than using private vehicles after net sessions. The advisory states, “All players must travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions. Separate travel arrangements with families are discouraged to maintain discipline and team cohesion. Any exceptions must be pre-approved by the head coach and the Chairman of the Selection Committee.”
Another clause mandates players to stay for the full duration of scheduled practice sessions and travel together. Non-compliance with this rule could result in serious action from the BCCI.
Commercial Endorsements During Tours
To minimize distractions, players will not be permitted to participate in personal endorsement shoots during an ongoing series or tour. The rule ensures that players remain focused on their cricketing responsibilities and team commitments.
India’s Champions Trophy 2025 Schedule
The Indian team will depart for Dubai on February 15, with their opening match against Bangladesh on February 20. The highly anticipated clash against Pakistan is scheduled for February 23, followed by their final league-stage match against New Zealand on March 2. If India progresses, the semifinal will take place on March 4, with the final set for March 9.
Conclusion
With the implementation of these stringent SOPs, the BCCI is reinforcing discipline and professionalism within Team India. The governing body has made it clear that there will be no compromises on these guidelines. The players now face the challenge of adapting to these regulations while focusing on delivering a strong performance in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
