Ben Sears Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Jacob Duffy Named Replacement

New Zealand has suffered a setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with pace bowler Ben Sears ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Jacob Duffy, who is currently with the squad for the ODI Tri-Series in Pakistan, has been named as his replacement for the global tournament.

Sears’ Injury Forces Withdrawal

During New Zealand’s first training session in Karachi, Sears experienced discomfort in his left hamstring. A subsequent scan confirmed a minor tear, requiring at least two weeks of rehabilitation. Given the short duration of the tournament, Sears would have missed most of the group-stage matches, leaving him available only for the final group clash against India on March 2.

Head coach Gary Stead expressed sympathy for the young pacer, stating:

“It’s heartbreaking for Ben to miss out on his first major ICC event. Unfortunately, the recovery timeframe meant he would likely be unavailable for most of the tournament, so we had to bring in a fully fit replacement.”

Stead remains optimistic about Sears’ recovery, expecting him to return in time for New Zealand’s home series against Pakistan after the tournament.

Jacob Duffy Steps In

Jacob Duffy, a consistent performer in domestic and international cricket, steps in as Sears’ replacement. The right-arm pacer impressed during New Zealand’s recent home series against Sri Lanka, proving his ability to perform at the highest level.

Stead praised Duffy’s readiness, saying:

“Jacob has shown his quality at the international level. He has been with the squad for the tri-series, so he’s already acclimated to the conditions. This will be his first senior ICC event, making it an exciting opportunity for him.”

New Zealand’s Champions Trophy 2025 Fixtures

The Black Caps will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Pakistan on February 19 in Karachi. They will then face Bangladesh on February 24 in Rawalpindi before concluding their group-stage matches against India on March 2 in Dubai.

With Duffy replacing Sears, New Zealand will look to put up a strong challenge in the tournament.
