Bangladesh’s Test and ODI captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, has spoken about the challenges of leading across all three formats. Initially appointed until the 2025 Champions Trophy, Najmul considered stepping down due to the pressure but ultimately decided to relinquish only the T20I captaincy.
Leadership Journey
Najmul took charge during the 2023 ODI World Cup, replacing Shakib Al Hasan. After a tough campaign, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made him the permanent captain.
Under his leadership, Bangladesh achieved key milestones:
- First-ever home Test win vs. New Zealand in November 2023
- First ODI and T20I victories in New Zealand in December 2023
- Historic Test series sweep vs. Pakistan in August 2024
However, the 5-0 ODI series loss to India raised concerns about team consistency.
Challenges and Off-Field Distractions
The BCB’s leadership changes impacted the team, especially after head coach Chandika Hathurusingha was replaced by Phil Simmons. Addressing speculation, Najmul said:
“The dressing room was positive in Pakistan and similar in India. While management changes can have some effect, blaming it entirely for our performance isn’t fair.”
He also criticized media speculation about coaching decisions during major series, stating that it affects player morale.
Stepping Down from T20I Captaincy
After leading Bangladesh to the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Najmul initially planned to resign from all formats after the South Africa series. However, after discussions with BCB President Faruque Ahmed, he decided to continue leading in Tests and ODIs.
“Managing all three formats was overwhelming. I wasn’t struggling with my batting, but switching formats felt like too much pressure.”
He also admitted that communication gaps affected his decision-making as captain.
Future of Bangladesh Captaincy
Najmul emphasized the need for a long-term captain with full authority, saying:
“A captain should have decision-making power, just like in other major cricketing nations. If the board trusts someone, they should give him full freedom to lead.”
While the BCB is yet to confirm Bangladesh’s future captaincy structure, Najmul remains in contention as Test and ODI skipper. The board will also decide on the future of head coach Phil Simmons, whose contract ended after the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Speaking about Simmons, Najmul said:
“He is calm, strategic, and ensures every player has a clear role. He treats everyone equally, regardless of seniority.”
With the 2027 ODI World Cup ahead, BCB’s decisions on captaincy and coaching will play a crucial role in shaping Bangladesh cricket’s future.
Najmul hopes the board will allow the next captain, whether himself or someone else, the authority to lead the team independently and bring long-term success.
