Karun Nair stood out as India’s saviour on a challenging Day 1 of the fifth Test at The Oval. On a green pitch under grey skies, Nair’s composed half-century guided India to 204/6. After four tame surfaces, the series finally came alive with seam, swing, and bite.

🧢 Karun Nair steadies India after early blows

Once again, India lost the toss — their 15th in men’s internationals this year. Consequently, they were forced to bat first under testing conditions. The first session saw just 23 overs due to rain, yet both Indian openers were dismissed.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was trapped by a delivery that jagged back in sharply. He was given out on review. Shortly after, KL Rahul chopped on while trying to cut a hard-length ball. As a result, India slumped to 39/2 early.

Although Gus Atkinson bowled only six overs in his opening spell, he was relentless. He gave away just 7 runs and removed Jaiswal. Meanwhile, Woakes struggled at first but switched ends and bounced back well, claiming the crucial wicket of Rahul.

🎯 Karun Nair’s fifty leads key fightback

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings briefly. They added 45 runs through sharp singles and calm strokeplay. However, Gill’s promising knock ended due to a direct hit from Atkinson. It was a momentum-shifting moment.

Karun Nair walked in under pressure. Even so, he looked calm and composed from the start. Sudharsan played with control but fell to a steep bouncer from Josh Tongue. Then Jadeja followed soon after, nicking another rising delivery.

As a result, India were 123/5 — their worst position at the fall of the fifth wicket in this series. Despite that, Nair showed great composure. He built a steady stand with Dhruv Jurel, who also looked confident at the crease.

Although their partnership added only 30 runs, it helped India breathe again. Jurel eventually edged a backfoot punch to slips, but the innings had regained some shape.

⚔️ Karun Nair and Sundar punish sloppy England

At that point, England lost control. Woakes left the field with a shoulder injury, and Overton looked out of rhythm. Consequently, their lines wavered. Nair and Washington Sundar capitalised with smart rotation and timely boundaries.

Nair brought up his fifty with a smooth glance to backward square. His knock was not flashy but full of intent. Furthermore, Sundar supported him well, looking confident and composed.

In fact, 30 of India’s 204 runs came in extras — a reflection of England’s sloppy execution. As the day progressed, India looked more settled. Both batters were unbroken at stumps, with Nair unbeaten on 52.

Looking ahead, India will hope to stretch their total towards 300. Therefore, the roles of Nair and Sundar on Day 2 will be crucial.
