AUSvsSA signals the start of Australia’s 2025 summer, and the squad just got stronger. Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood rejoin the national team for the white-ball home series against South Africa after missing the Caribbean tour, where Australia clean-swept West Indies 5-0.
🔁 AUSvsSA Squad Boost: Head & Hazlewood Return
Head and Hazlewood bring experience and composure to both squads. Their absence during the recent T20Is gave others a chance to shine, but selectors decided to reintroduce them for this crucial home stretch.
Due to the reduced T20 squad size of 14, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, and Xavier Bartlett didn’t make the cut. However, the selection panel, led by George Bailey, emphasized that these players still remain in contention for future tours.
Australia now looks to rotate effectively while maintaining momentum ahead of a packed calendar.
🆕 AUSvsSA Middle-Order Refresh: Owen Gets His Chance
Following the ODI retirements of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell, selectors moved quickly to restructure the middle order. As a result, Mitchell Owen earned his first ODI call-up based on his impressive domestic form and all-round ability.
Cameron Green also returns, offering flexibility with both bat and ball. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne retains his ODI place. Even though he lost his Test spot, his consistency in the 50-over format proved too valuable to ignore.
💪 AUSvsSA Rotation Strategy and Injury Updates
Matthew Short, who missed the Caribbean tour with a side strain, has fully recovered and features in both squads. The team continues to prioritize player workload. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins remain rested to ensure peak fitness before the Test summer.
In the meantime, Mitchell Marsh continues as captain in both formats. His leadership during recent tours has impressed management and selectors alike.

🎙️ Selectors Back Balance in AUSvsSA Plans
George Bailey, Chair of Selectors, explained the decisions clearly:
“The smaller home squad and the return of Head and Hazlewood meant a few had to sit out this time. But every player remains in the frame. We’ll continue creating opportunities across the South Africa, New Zealand, and India series to build depth ahead of the Test summer.”
