🏆 Owen Fifer Powers Washington Freedom Into MLC 2025 Playoffs

Owen Fifer (5/17) delivered one of the most electrifying spells of the MLC 2025 season as Washington Freedom handed San Francisco Unicorns their first loss, securing a well-deserved spot in the playoffs. Paired with a gritty 58 from Glenn Phillips, Freedom’s comeback story was built on pure resilience, aggression, and belief.

⚡ Owen Fifer Fights Back After Top-Order Collapse

Washington Freedom, after choosing to bat, had a nightmare start. On the very first ball of the match, Mitchell Owen was dismissed by a fiery Xavier Bartlett, who then tore through the top order by removing Andries Gous and Rachin Ravindra in quick succession. Haris Rauf soon joined the party, dismissing skipper Glenn Maxwell to leave Freedom reeling at 30/4 inside the first six overs.

The Unicorns were flying high and looked well on their way to another dominant win.

🔄 Phillips, Edwards, and a Late Burst Rescue Freedom

However, Glenn Phillips and Jack Edwards had other plans. The duo batted with calm precision, putting together a 71-run partnership that gave the innings much-needed stability. Edwards contributed a composed 42 off 41, while Phillips led the rebuild with a fluent 58 off 39 that included calculated aggression.

When Bartlett came back to take Edwards’ wicket — his fourth of the match — it looked like another collapse might follow. But the final overs saw a major shift in momentum.

Enter Obus Pienaar and Mukhtar Ahmed. Their late blitz produced 69 runs from the last 30 balls, including an 18-run 20th over. Pienaar finished unbeaten on 30 off 12, while Mukhtar added a quickfire 17 off 9, pushing Washington to a competitive 169/6.

🚀 Unicorns Start Fast, But Owen Fifer Flips the Script

In reply, the Unicorns got off to a flying start. Matthew Short was in top gear, hammering boundaries at will. He and Finn Allen added 51 runs in the first five overs, threatening to chase down the target with ease.

But Amila Aponso struck to remove Allen for 7. Soon after, Rachin Ravindra cleaned up Jake Fraser-McGurk. Though Short kept the scoreboard ticking, building a decent partnership with Sanjay Krishnamurthi, the pressure was building.

That’s when Owen Fifer returned to the spotlight.

💥 Owen Fifer Shatters the Middle Order

In the 11th over, Owen dismissed Short, who mistimed one to long-on. Two overs later, he bowled a game-changing double-wicket over — dismissing Hassan Khan and Romario Shepherd off consecutive deliveries, bringing the Unicorns down to 105/6.

His spell was far from over.

🧊 Owen Fifer Seals the Game in the Death Overs

The middle order shattered, Unicorns tried to claw back into the match. Ian Holland and Jack Edwards applied pressure with tight overs. Jahmar Hamilton tried to fight back with a run-a-ball knock, supported briefly by Rauf.

But in the 19th over, Owen Fifer returned to clean up both Rauf and Brody Couch, completing his exceptional 5-wicket haul for just 17 runs.

Unicorns needed 27 runs off the final over — and despite Hamilton’s efforts — they could only manage 15, falling 12 runs short.
