Gambhir has led a bold overhaul of Team India’s support staff ahead of the crucial England tour. The BCCI has removed three members from the setup:

  • Abhishek Nayar – Assistant Coach
  • T Dilip – Fielding Coach
  • Soham Desai – Strength & Conditioning Coach

Their contracts end in June 2025. As a result, the team will travel with a significantly leaner staff. Only one new member joins the setup.

Adrian le Roux Replaces Soham Desai

Adrian le Roux, a South African fitness expert, will now replace Soham Desai as the new Strength & Conditioning Coach. Previously, he worked with Team India and currently serves with the Punjab Kings.

However, PBKS officials said they haven’t received formal confirmation about his departure. Nonetheless, his return would mark a familiar addition to the national side.

Gambhir Retains His Core Coaching Team

Despite the cuts, Gambhir has opted to retain the coaches he handpicked:

  • Sitanshu Kotak – Batting Coach
  • Morne Morkel – Bowling Coach
  • Ryan ten Doeschate – Assistant Coach & Fielding Coach

Notably, ten Doeschate—who previously worked with the Kolkata Knight Riders—will now take over as the fielding coach, following Dilip’s exit.

Why These Changes Were Expected

India’s poor showing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy triggered this reset. Initially, Gambhir maintained continuity. However, after a series of setbacks, he decided to take control.

He appointed Sitanshu Kotak as batting coach, which reduced the need for Abhishek Nayar. Ironically, Nayar had been Gambhir’s recommendation from their KKR days.

In contrast, Gambhir now prioritizes sharper roles and accountability.

What Lies Ahead for Nayar and Dilip?

  • Abhishek Nayar may return to KKR, where he led the KKR Academy and trained multiple high-profile players. For instance, KL Rahul publicly praised Nayar’s role in his IPL turnaround this season.
  • Meanwhile, T Dilip has been linked to a possible role with the Andhra Cricket Association. He visited their academy recently. However, ACA has officially denied any coaching deal so far.

Gambhir’s Leadership Sets a New Tone

Clearly, Gambhir is shaping the team according to his vision. His decisions show a preference for streamlined roles and high performance. Whether this new coaching structure succeeds will be tested during the England series, but it certainly reflects a fresh, determined approach.
