Will Pucovski, once seen as a future leader of Australian cricket, has officially retired from all forms of the game at just 27. His decision comes after a year filled with physical and emotional struggles, most of which stemmed from repeated head injuries.

In March 2024, during a Sheffield Shield match, Pucovski suffered his latest concussion after a bouncer from Riley Meredith struck him on the helmet. Consequently, he retired hurt and began experiencing severe post-concussion symptoms, which ultimately became the turning point in his career.

Speaking on SEN Radio, Pucovski confirmed that he is stepping away from the game entirely. “It’s been a really difficult year,” he said. “The simple message is, I won’t be playing at any level again.”
In the months following the concussion, he struggled to function normally. For instance, even walking around the house was difficult, and he often felt drained. As a result, his quality of life deteriorated significantly, leading him to a heartbreaking decision.
Will Pucovski Medical Panel Urged Retirement
Although an independent medical panel advised him to retire in 2023, Pucovski hesitated. At the time, he hoped his symptoms would eventually ease. However, as he admitted, “When you’re struggling mentally, it’s hard to make a huge decision.”
He emphasized that while the panel’s recommendation was strong, the final call had to come from him. Still, he spent months trying to understand the nature of his brain injury before finally accepting that his health had to come first.
Will Pucovski Long-Term Symptoms and Life Impact
Moreover, Pucovski explained the lasting effects of his injuries. “The fatigue is quite bad, I get regular headaches, and I struggle with things on my left side,” he said. In addition, motion sickness and dizziness became a constant issue, making everyday life increasingly difficult.
Most importantly, he acknowledged that these symptoms had changed who he was. “I know what I was like before these concussions,” he said, “and I know what I am now. That’s scary—for me and for my family.”
Will Pucovski One Test Cap, Endless Potential
Despite the early end to his career, Pucovski still cherishes the memory of wearing the Baggy Green. He made his Test debut in 2021 against India at the SCG, scoring a half-century. Although he only played one Test, his potential had once hinted at a long international career.
“My ambition didn’t stop there,” he admitted. “I wanted to be a leader in the batting group. I wanted to play 100 Tests. Unfortunately, that dream ends at one.”

Looking ahead, Pucovski has chosen to focus on recovery and well-being. “I just don’t want to risk doing any more damage to my brain than I’ve already done,” he stated.
Even though the decision was painful, he believes it was necessary. “At 27, I have so much life ahead of me. Cricket was a big part of it—but now it’s time to move on.”
