From Last-Minute Call-Up to Hard Lessons
Mahidul Bangladesh’s young wicketkeeper-batter, Mahidul Islam Ankon, is now better prepared for international cricket. He learned valuable lessons from his Test debut against South Africa.
Mahidul Last October, he received a sudden call-up for the Chattogram Test. He replaced Jaker Ali, who was ruled out with a concussion. First-choice wicketkeeper Litton Das was also unavailable due to illness, opening the door for Ankon.
At the time, Ankon was playing in the National Cricket League (NCL). He had to leave immediately for Chattogram before even completing his match for Dhaka Division.
A Challenging Debut, But a Learning Experience
His first Test was difficult. He made errors behind the stumps and struggled with the bat. Ankon managed only 0 and 29 in his two innings. Despite the tough start, he sees the experience as a stepping stone.
Now, with Litton Das opting out of the Zimbabwe Test series for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Ankon is back in contention. This time, he feels mentally stronger and ready for the challenge.
Improved Mindset and Better Preparation
“I won’t make excuses because I was already playing when I got the call-up,” Ankon told Cricbuzz. “Maybe my mind was still on the NCL match. But now, I am preparing myself mentally.”
He admitted to feeling nervous on debut. “To hide my nerves, I tried to appear excited behind the stumps. But I’ve learned it’s important to stay calm and enjoy the game.”
“In the first innings, I got out early. In the second, I had a start but couldn’t convert it into a big score. These are my lessons. Cricket is a game of bat and ball, but adapting to the situation is key. This time, I have enough time to prepare. If given another chance, I believe I can perform better for the team.”
Mentor’s Support Brings Confidence
Ankon is also drawing confidence from his mentor, Mohammad Salahuddin. The experienced coach is currently working as Bangladesh’s senior assistant coach.
“Having him around is a big advantage. He understands me well and helps ease my nerves. I have played under him in domestic tournaments, and his presence will help me a lot,” Ankon said.
Aiming for a Strong Comeback
With past lessons in mind and better preparation, Ankon is eager to prove himself. If given another opportunity, he aims to make a lasting impact for Bangladesh in Test cricket.
