Neil Wagner ended his New Zealand domestic career on a high, leading Northern Districts to their first Plunket Shield title since 2012. The veteran pacer took eight wickets, including a crucial five-wicket haul on the final day, securing a dominant win over Otago in Dunedin.
Neil Wagner’s Final-Day Heroics
Northern Districts needed seven wickets for an outright win, while Otago had to chase 287 runs. Neil Wagner delivered under pressure, dismantling Otago’s lineup and dismissing them for 272 in pursuit of 407.
“This is definitely up there. Winning the Plunket Shield in my last game is a dream come true,” Wagner said emotionally.
Neil Wagner’s Career Comes Full Circle
Neil Wagner’s domestic career began in 2008 at University Oval, playing for Otago against Northern Districts. He switched teams in 2018-19 but had never won the Plunket Shield before.
“I’ve finished second many times with Otago and ND. This time, we got over the line. The team was outstanding all season,” he said.
The left-arm pacer praised Jeet Raval’s leadership and the coaching of BJ Watling and Daniel Flynn.
“Everyone knew their role and executed it perfectly. It never felt secure until we needed just three wickets. That’s when I knew it was happening.”
Neil Wagner’s Emotional Farewell
Wagner walked off to a guard of honor on his final day and couldn’t hold back his emotions.
“It’s awkward, but it means a lot. It shows I left a mark on my teammates and the game.”
He described his 17-year journey in New Zealand as unforgettable.
“I lost my voice celebrating in the dressing room! Winning a trophy on my last day is surreal.”
What’s Next for Neil Wagner?
Though Wagner has retired from New Zealand domestic cricket, his career isn’t over yet. He will return to Durham for the last four months of the 2025 County Championship, with his first match set for June 22 against Sussex.
With 849 first-class wickets, Neil Wagner still has more to give before hanging up his boots for good.
