New Zealand faces a major setback as Tom Latham fractures his right hand ahead of the ODI series against Pakistan. He sustained the injury during a training session, forcing him to miss the series. Henry Nicholls steps in as his replacement.
Tom Latham’s Injury and Recovery Plan
Latham injured his hand while batting in the nets earlier this week. An X-ray confirmed the fracture. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced that he will need a cast and at least four weeks of rest and rehabilitation.
Michael Bracewell Takes Over as Captain
With Latham unavailable, Michael Bracewell takes charge as ODI captain. He already leads the team in the T20I series. Latham was originally set to captain the side in place of Mitchell Santner, who is currently playing in the IPL.
Henry Nicholls Earns Recall After Strong Domestic Form
Nicholls regains his spot after delivering impressive performances in domestic cricket. Since recovering from a calf strain, he has scored five half-centuries in his last six innings. His form secures his return to the national squad.
Will Young to Miss Two Matches, Rhys Mariu Joins the Squad
Opener Will Young will miss the second and third ODIs to be with his wife as they await the birth of their first child. He will play the first match in Napier before Rhys Mariu takes his place. Mariu earns his maiden international call-up.
Gary Stead Confident Despite Tom Latham’s Absence
“We’ve had to adapt throughout this tour. Losing Tom is tough, but it’s an opportunity for others. We’re excited to introduce Rhys and welcome back Henry.”
He also praised Nicholls’ form and expressed trust in Bracewell’s leadership.
“Henry has performed brilliantly since his return. Michael has led well in the T20Is, and we trust him to do the same in ODIs.”
Finally, Stead wished Will Young and his wife Elise well as they prepare for their first child.
