A new franchise-based cricket tournament, the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), will take place in Dublin (Ireland) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). Organizers announced the six-team event on March 18, confirming that the International Cricket Council (ICC) sanctioned the tournament. The competition will run from July 15 to August 8, marking a major step forward for European cricket.

Tri-nation collaboration to grow cricket in Europe

Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands have joined forces to launch this league. Each country will host two franchise teams. In addition, every squad will include eight homegrown players and one emerging European cricketer, ensuring strong local representation.

Unlike other leagues, Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and Cricket Netherlands are collectively backing this initiative. Their collaboration highlights a shared commitment to expanding the sport across Europe.

Format, market reach, and competition

The league follows a franchise-based model with a player draft, similar to other major T20 tournaments. However, it stands out as the first tri-nation league of its kind. As a result, it has the potential to attract a broader audience across Europe.

The Irish teams will represent Dublin and Belfast, increasing the tournament’s competitive edge. Furthermore, this event will provide a platform for young cricketers to showcase their skills, helping to boost the sport’s popularity in the region.

Abhishek Bachchan joins as co-founder

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has taken on the role of promoter and co-founder. Expressing his excitement, he said:

“Being part of the European T20 Premier League is an incredible opportunity. This league will not only promote cricket in Europe but also deliver top entertainment. I believe it will create an amazing experience for fans and families alike.”

With ETPL 2025 set to launch, fans can expect high-energy cricket action featuring both global stars and emerging European talent.
