Rachin Ravindra continues to shine on the grandest stages of international cricket. The talented left-hander, who made headlines during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, once again delivered a stellar performance, guiding New Zealand to a 50-run victory over South Africa in the Champions Trophy semi-final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on March 5.
Ravindra’s remarkable knock of 100-plus runs marked his fifth ODI century—all of which have come in ICC tournaments—setting a new record for a New Zealand player. Moreover, alongside Kane Williamson, who also registered a ton, Ravindra played a pivotal role in scripting history as the Black Caps posted the highest total in Champions Trophy history.
Ravindra Reflects on His Innings
Speaking at the post-match press conference, an elated Ravindra expressed his joy at contributing to the team’s success.
“It’s always special to perform for the team, especially in a semi-final win,” Ravindra said. “South Africa bowled well early on, which made things tricky. However, building key partnerships with Will Young and then Kane helped me settle in.”
The left-hander emphasized the importance of adapting to the game’s ebbs and flows. “In an ODI innings, facing over 100 balls means there will be phases where you struggle. Fortunately, having my teammates around to support me made a big difference. In the end, it’s about pushing through and taking advantage of the moments when things start going your way.”
New Zealand’s Record-Breaking Total
The Black Caps initially aimed for a total around the 300-run mark, given the slow nature of the surface. However, a late acceleration, led by Williamson’s masterclass and powerful cameos from Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell, saw them reach a commanding 362/6.
“We thought 300-320 would be a good score,” Ravindra admitted. “The pitch was a bit slow, and their cutters were gripping. But then Kane picked up the pace, and the finishing touches by Glenn and Daryl gave us those extra 30-40 runs. Consequently, we felt more confident heading into the second innings.”
Santner Leads the Bowling Attack
With a formidable total on the board, New Zealand’s bowlers stepped up, ensuring South Africa never found momentum in the chase. As expected, Mitchell Santner spearheaded the attack with a brilliant spell of 3/43, dismissing key players Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Heinrich Klaasen.
Santner’s spell was complemented by Michael Bracewell’s disciplined bowling, further strangling the Proteas’ scoring rate. “Our goal as a bowling unit was to apply pressure and pick up wickets in the middle overs,” Santner explained. “Therefore, it was satisfying to see our plans work effectively. More importantly, we stuck to our strengths and executed our strategies well.”
South Africa Fall Short in the Chase
Chasing 363, South Africa got off to a promising start with Bavuma and van der Dussen adding 105 runs for the second wicket. Nevertheless, Bavuma’s cautious approach, coupled with the loss of wickets at regular intervals, derailed their momentum.
“We were 125/1 and in a decent position,” Bavuma reflected. “However, we couldn’t capitalize on key moments. We needed one of us to go on and play a big innings like Ravindra or Williamson did for New Zealand. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and we fell behind the required run rate.”
New Zealand’s All-Round Dominance
It was a forgettable outing for South Africa’s bowling unit, as they struggled to contain New Zealand’s relentless batting assault. Apart from Aiden Markram’s part-time spin, none of the bowlers managed to keep the scoring in check.
“They outplayed us in all departments,” Bavuma admitted. “Their ability to build partnerships and accelerate at the right moments was the difference. Consequently, credit to Ravindra, Williamson, and the rest of their batters for executing their plans so well. From our side, we needed to be sharper and seize key moments better.”
With this commanding victory, New Zealand stormed into yet another ICC final, proving their consistency in global tournaments. As they prepare for the ultimate showdown, Ravindra’s red-hot form remains a key asset in their quest for silverware.
