Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has pulled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a lingering ankle issue and personal reasons. After playing all seven of Australia’s recent Test matches, he has decided to focus on regaining full fitness ahead of the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s in June.

Speaking on the Willow Talk podcast, Starc shared his reasons for skipping the tournament:

“There are a few different reasons, some personal views. I had some ankle pain during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, so I need to get that sorted. With the Test Championship final and a West Indies tour coming up, my priority is getting my body right. There’s also some IPL cricket, but the Test final is the main focus.”

Hybrid format raises questions

Although Starc did not elaborate on his personal reasons, his absence comes amid the hybrid format of the tournament. Teams must travel to Dubai for matches against India, while the remaining games are played in Pakistan, which is hosting its first major ICC event since 1996.

Australia, grouped with England, South Africa, and Afghanistan, will play all their group-stage matches in Pakistan under heavy security.

Australia without key pacers

With Starc opting out, Australia’s pace attack takes a major hit as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are also missing due to injuries.

As Starc shifts his focus to Test cricket, Australia will have to adjust their bowling strategy in the Champions Trophy without their top fast bowlers.
