Delhi Capitals have appointed former England captain Kevin Pietersen as their mentor for IPL 2025, bringing in a fresh perspective to their revamped coaching setup. The franchise has made significant changes to its backroom staff, naming Hemang Badani as Head Coach, Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket, Matthew Mott as Assistant Coach, and Munaf Patel as Bowling Coach.
The team is yet to announce its captain for the upcoming season after releasing Rishabh Pant, who had led the side in previous editions.
Pietersen, who captained the Delhi franchise (then known as Delhi Daredevils) in the 2014 season, also had a stint as Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s skipper in 2009. This appointment marks his first-ever coaching role in the IPL since retiring from professional cricket in 2016.
Beyond the cricket field, Pietersen maintains strong ties with the GMR Group, the co-owners of Delhi Capitals. He was instrumental in brokering a deal that enabled GMR to acquire Hampshire County Cricket Club in October 2024, strengthening their global cricket footprint.
Delhi Capitals, who have reached just one IPL final in 17 seasons, are eager to break their title drought. They will begin their 2025 campaign with a blockbuster clash against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24, a match that gains extra significance with their former captain Rishabh Pant now leading LSG.
