Ryan Rickelton continued his stellar form, making an impactful start to the Champions Trophy 2025 by registering his maiden ODI century. The left-handed opener played a composed innings of 103 off 106 balls, setting the foundation for South Africa’s formidable 315/6 at the National Stadium, Karachi. Contributions from Temba Bavuma (50), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (52)* further strengthened the innings against Afghanistan.
Bavuma’s Decision to Bat Pays Off
Opting to bat first, South Africa looked to capitalize on conditions similar to the tournament opener. Openers Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi started steadily before Afghanistan’s seasoned all-rounder Mohammad Nabi struck with his very first delivery. De Zorzi miscued a short ball to mid-on, falling cheaply.
Despite the early setback, Rickelton dominated the PowerPlay, mixing classic drives against pacers with an effective use of sweeps against spinners. Bavuma played the perfect supporting role, keeping the scoreboard ticking while ensuring South Africa maintained a steady run rate. Afghanistan faced an injury scare as Fazalhaq Farooqi limped off after completing his five-over spell.
Rickelton’s Century and South Africa’s Middle-Order Stability
Rickelton had a minor moment of fortune when a mistimed shot off Nabi’s arm ball landed safely between two fielders. However, his innings remained largely flawless as he reached his half-century in 48 balls and later brought up his century in 33rd over, becoming the third centurion of the tournament in as many matches.
His innings ended soon after when Rashid Khan’s quick reflexes led to a sharp run-out. The Afghan captain stopped the ball in his follow-through and fired a direct throw to the keeper, catching Rickelton with his bat in the air.
At 201/3 in 35 overs, South Africa needed to guard against a middle-order collapse, especially in the absence of Heinrich Klaasen, who was sidelined due to a left elbow injury. However, van der Dussen and Markram ensured stability while maintaining an aggressive scoring rate.
Markram and Van Der Dussen Power South Africa Past 300
Van der Dussen, who had notched up an ODI fifty after nearly two years, reached the milestone in just 41 balls, utilizing the sweep shot effectively against Rashid Khan. Markram was even more aggressive, smashing six fours and a six in his 36-ball unbeaten 52 to push South Africa’s total past 315/6 in 50 overs.
Brief Scores:
South Africa – 315/6 in 50 overs (Ryan Rickelton 103, Aiden Markram 52, Rassie van der Dussen 52; Mohammad Nabi 2-51*) vs Afghanistan
This high-scoring innings sets the stage for an exciting chase as Afghanistan looks to respond to the Proteas’ dominant batting performance. Stay tuned for more updates from the Champions Trophy 2025!
