Fakhar Zaman Ruled Out of Champions Trophy Due to Injury

Pakistan has been dealt a huge setback in the Champions Trophy 2025 as opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the tournament due to a lower back injury. The left-hander picked up the injury while fielding in Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand and has not traveled with the squad to Dubai, where they will take on arch-rivals India in a high-stakes clash.

How Fakhar Zaman Suffered the Injury

The injury occurred just two balls into New Zealand’s innings when Will Young played a shot off Shaheen Afridi’s bowling. Zaman sprinted to save the boundary and successfully stopped the ball, but in the process, he injured his lower back and had to leave the field immediately.

He returned to the field towards the end of New Zealand’s innings but was unable to open the batting due to his extended absence. When he finally came out at No.4, he struggled with running between the wickets and managed 24 runs off 41 balls, forming a 47-run partnership with Babar Azam. However, his discomfort was evident, and Pakistan ultimately fell 60 runs short in their chase of 320.

PCB’s Statement on Zaman’s Injury

Following the match, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement regarding Fakhar Zaman’s condition:

“Fakhar Zaman is being assessed for a muscular sprain, and further updates will be provided in due course.”

However, inside sources have now confirmed that Zaman’s injury is serious enough to rule him out for the remainder of the tournament, leaving Pakistan with a major selection headache ahead of their next fixtures.

Pakistan’s Remaining Fixtures – Tough Road Ahead

With Fakhar Zaman ruled out, Pakistan will need to reshuffle their top order as they prepare for their final two Group A matches:

  • February 23 – vs India in Dubai
  • February 27 – vs Bangladesh in Rawalpindi

As defending champions, Pakistan must recover quickly from their opening loss and make tactical adjustments, especially at the top of the batting order.

Who Can Replace Fakhar Zaman?

With Zaman ruled out, Pakistan’s management may turn to Mohammad Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique, or Saim Ayub to fill the vacant opening slot. Rizwan is the most experienced option, while Ayub’s attacking approach could be useful against India. The decision will be crucial for Pakistan’s campaign.

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy Hopes in Jeopardy?

Losing a key player like Fakhar Zaman ahead of their most important match against India is a massive setback for Pakistan. The team will need a strong performance to stay in contention for the semi-finals.

The focus now shifts to Pakistan’s new opening combination and whether they can step up in Zaman’s absence. Will Pakistan bounce back, or will this injury prove costly? The answer lies in the upcoming clash against India.
