Gujarat Giants Fall Short in Season Opener Against RCB

For the third consecutive season, Gujarat Giants began their Women’s Premier League (WPL) campaign on a disappointing note. This time, however, it wasn’t Mumbai Indians dealing the opening blow. Instead, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) chased down a record 202-run target with six wickets in hand and nine balls to spare in a high-scoring contest.

Despite the loss, Gujarat Giants’ head coach, Michael Klinger, remained optimistic. “If we bat like this throughout the tournament, we’re going to win a lot of matches. That’s a big positive to take from the game,” he stated.

Mooney and Gardner Power Giants to 201

The Giants’ top order came out with an aggressive mindset, setting the foundation for a formidable total. Beth Mooney, after overcoming an early setback that saw Laura Wolvaardt and Dayalan Hemalatha dismissed cheaply, played a captain’s knock. She anchored the innings with a 42-ball 56, rotating strike efficiently while finding gaps to accelerate the scoring.

The middle order built on Mooney’s start. Deandra Dottin took on Kim Garth, smashing three consecutive boundaries in her quick-fire 25 off 13 balls. Simran Shaikh and Harleen Deol also contributed with timely hits, but it was Ashleigh Gardner who stole the show. Gardner launched a brutal assault in the latter half of the innings, registering a record eight sixes. Her 14th-over onslaught against Prema Rawat, where she struck three consecutive sixes, set the tone for a strong finish.

Klinger was full of praise for Gardner’s performance. “She has been in great form over the last 6-12 months. She was confident coming into the tournament, and it showed. She picked her moments well, rotated the strike effectively with Beth, and played a smart innings. Scoring 200 in a T20 game is something you take nine times out of ten.”

Fielding Lapses Cost Giants the Match

Despite Gardner’s brilliance with the bat, Giants faltered in the field. Gardner struck early with the ball, dismissing RCB openers Smriti Mandhana and Danni Wyatt-Hodge in the second over. However, their fielding struggles allowed RCB to seize control of the chase. Raghvi Bist’s sluggish 27-ball 25 slowed the scoring rate, handing RCB a crucial advantage.

Ellyse Perry, Richa Ghosh, and Kanika Ahuja capitalized on a flat batting surface, aided by heavy dew, making gripping the ball difficult for the fielders. Gujarat’s fielding woes compounded their troubles—missed catches, overthrows, and misfields proved costly. Perry was given two lifelines at scores of 2 and 11, while Ghosh was dropped before opening her account.

Klinger defended his team, highlighting the challenging conditions. “The dew made fielding tough, but that’s something we need to adapt to, especially since we’re playing here in Baroda for the next few games. We had our chances, but we didn’t capitalize. That’s something we need to work on.”

Lessons for Gujarat Giants Moving Forward

The optimism in the Giants’ camp echoes their approach from the previous seasons. However, with just four wins in their last 10 matches and back-to-back wooden spoon finishes, they understand that mere learnings won’t suffice. The tournament dynamics will soon push them into must-win scenarios. For now, they can take solace in their batting firepower, but they must tighten their fielding and bowling to stay competitive in the WPL 2025 season.
