Mumbai Indians Cape Town (MICT) showcased a dominant performance to clinch the SA20 2025 title, thrashing Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) by 76 runs in a thrilling final at the Wanderers on Saturday. This marked a significant triumph for MICT, dethroning the two-time champions with an all-round masterclass.

MICT Sets a Challenging Total

Having already bested SEC twice earlier in the tournament, MICT aimed to complete a perfect treble. However, the opening exchanges were rather subdued, with Craig Overton and Marco Jansen keeping things tight. Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton accumulated just four runs off the first eight balls, creating an eerily tense atmosphere despite the packed stadium.

But then, Rickelton ignited the fireworks. A flurry of boundaries, including back-to-back sixes off Jansen, set the tone. Four more maximums followed in the next few overs before Overton outfoxed Rickelton (51 off 31) with a well-disguised slower delivery.

Richard Gleeson then removed Reeza Hendricks, and with Liam Dawson and Aiden Markram tightening the screws, MICT lost three wickets for 16 runs within 20 balls. A potential batting collapse loomed, but Connor Esterhuizen and George Linde provided stability with a quick 26-run stand. The real momentum shift came when Esterhuizen and Dewald Brevis combined for a blistering 50 off 30 balls.

Brevis was sensational, hammering two fours and four sixes in his 18-ball 38. MICT powered their way to 181/8, the highest total ever in an SA20 final at the Wanderers. Gleeson’s disciplined bowling (conceding only four fours and no sixes) was a silver lining for SEC, but their batting unit had a steep chase ahead.

SEC Crumbles Under Pressure

SEC’s response started sluggishly, with David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi managing only three runs off the first over from Trent Boult. Bedingham fell in the next over, caught off Kagiso Rabada, and SEC quickly found themselves at 8/2 after Jordan Hermann edged Boult to the keeper.

Tom Abell and De Zorzi attempted to rebuild, adding 42 off 57 balls, keeping their hopes of a three-peat alive. However, Linde broke the partnership, stumping Abell for 30 in the 10th over. This triggered a dramatic collapse as three wickets tumbled for just nine runs in 11 balls, including Aiden Markram’s dismissal via a stunning Rabada catch.

At 74/5, SEC’s chances dwindled further when Boult, at his clinical best, trapped Tristan Stubbs with a deceptive slower ball, reducing them to 92/6. Rabada (3/25) delivered the knockout punch, dismissing Jansen and Dawson in quick succession, before SEC folded for just 105 in 18.4 overs.

A Deserving Champion

As MICT’s players celebrated their emphatic victory, a fan-held sign in the stands read: “There’s no AB like Adi Birrell!” While SEC’s legendary coach certainly played a pivotal role in their journey, even he would agree—the better team triumphed on the night. Mumbai Indians Cape Town, with their stellar performance, rightfully claimed their maiden SA20 championship.
