New Zealand has announced its squad for the three-match ODI series against Pakistan. Two uncapped players, Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas, have earned their maiden call-ups.

Kelly, 31, has been in outstanding form in domestic cricket, scoring over 1300 runs this season. He will open the batting alongside Will Young. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra are unavailable due to IPL commitments.

Abbas, 21, is a promising allrounder who migrated from Pakistan. His impressive performances in the Ford Trophy secured him a spot. He strengthens the squad by adding a sixth bowling option.

Leg-spinner Adi Ashok returns after making his debut against Bangladesh in December 2023. Only eight players from the recent ICC Champions Trophy final squad have been retained. Kane Williamson has opted out, while several key players are at the IPL.

The pace attack is missing Matt Henry, who is recovering from injuries. Kyle Jamieson has also been rested to manage his workload. With Mitchell Santner unavailable, Tom Latham will lead the team.

Chief selector Sam Wells sees this as a chance to develop fresh talent. “Many of our regular players are unavailable, so this is a great opportunity for new faces,” he said. “Nick has been a top performer in domestic cricket. Muhammad Abbas provides a valuable allrounder option. Adi Ashok brings accuracy in the middle overs.”

The series starts on March 29 in Napier, followed by matches in Hamilton (April 2) and Mount Maunganui (April 5). New Zealand recently dominated Pakistan in the T20I series, sealing the win with a game to spare.
