MI Cape Town Crushes Paarl Royals; Rashid Khan Sets T20 Record

MI Cape Town (MICT) delivered a commanding performance, defeating Paarl Royals by 39 runs in Gqeberha to book their place in the SA20 final. The grand showdown is set for Saturday (February 8) at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Adding to the historic night, Rashid Khan became the highest wicket-taker in T20 history, surpassing Dwayne Bravo with 632 wickets.

MICT’s Top Order Sets the Stage

Continuing their exceptional form throughout the tournament, MICT’s top order laid a strong foundation. Rassie van der Dussen, the leading run-scorer of the competition, and Ryan Rickelton forged a solid 87-run opening partnership. Young pacer Kwena Maphaka struggled early, conceding five wides in his first over before being taken for 15 runs in his second. Bjorn Fortuin also faced the heat, giving away three sixes in a single over.

Post PowerPlay, Mujeeb Ur Rahman dropped a crucial catch off Rickelton, adding to the Royals’ woes. However, Dayyaan Galiem provided a breakthrough by dismissing van der Dussen with a deceptive slower delivery. Dunith Wellalage followed up with two key wickets in the next over, including Rickelton. George Linde’s quickfire 26, featuring three sixes, kept the momentum going before he fell to Fortuin.

Dewald Brevis accelerated MICT’s innings, smashing two sixes off Galiem. The game remained evenly poised until the 18th over when Galiem bowled his second waist-high no-ball, forcing him out of the attack. Mitchell Owen, the Big Bash League hero for Hobart Hurricanes, struggled with the ball, conceding 21 runs in just five deliveries. Delano Potgieter and Brevis capitalized, blasting 44 runs off the final two overs to power MICT to a formidable 199/4.

Royals’ Chase Falls Short

Unlike MICT, Paarl Royals started aggressively, scoring 21 runs off Trent Boult’s opening over. However, Kagiso Rabada quickly turned the tide, dismissing Lhuan-dre Pretorius, while Boult removed Owen in his next over. Bosch sent Rubin Hermann back to the pavilion, leaving the Royals struggling after the PowerPlay.

Wickets continued to tumble throughout the innings, with only David Miller (45) and Dinesh Karthik (31) making notable contributions. Just when they seemed set, both batters fell at crucial junctures, sealing MICT’s dominance. Rashid Khan, leading his team with distinction, clean-bowled Wellalage to claim his 632nd T20 wicket, achieving a historic milestone at just 26 years old. The Royals were eventually bundled out for 160 in 19.4 overs, with every MICT bowler chipping in.

Royals Face Another Chance in Qualifier 2

Since Joe Root’s departure, Paarl Royals have suffered three consecutive defeats. However, they still have an opportunity to reach the final, facing the winner of the Eliminator between Joburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Qualifier 2.
