Santner starred with the ball as New Zealand completed a convincing nine-wicket win over Zimbabwe on Day 3 of the first Test in Bulawayo. The left-arm spinner claimed 4/27, while Matt Henry and William O’Rourke chipped in with three wickets each. As a result, Zimbabwe were bowled out for just 165 in their second innings.
Chasing only 8 runs, New Zealand wrapped up the match in 2.2 overs. With this win, they took a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
🔹 Santner spins through Zimbabwe’s hopes
Zimbabwe resumed Day 3 at 31/2, hoping to fight back. However, O’Rourke struck early, removing Nick Welch with an outswinger that nicked to the keeper. Shortly after, he dismissed Vincent Masekesa with a sharp short ball that popped up to short leg.
Meanwhile, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine showed some resistance. They added a half-century stand and found boundaries regularly. But just before lunch, the breakthrough came.
Santner struck to remove Williams on 49, caught down the leg side. Then, Henry dismissed Ervine with a delivery that moved away and took the edge. Therefore, Zimbabwe went to lunch at 114/6, still 44 behind.
🔹 Santner returns to end lower-order stand
After lunch, New Zealand kept applying pressure. Tsiga survived an early drop by Bracewell. Even so, Henry quickly removed Sikandar Raza, who top-edged a pull shot.
Eventually, Santner dismissed Newman Nyamhuri, who was bowled playing forward. Although Zimbabwe had fallen to 126/8, they found some resistance. Tsiga and Blessing Muzarabani added 36 runs for the ninth wicket.
Meanwhile, New Zealand missed a few chances. Ajaz Patel dropped a catch in the deep, and a wild throw denied them a run-out. Still, Santner remained patient. He returned to dismiss Muzarabani for 19 and then bowled Tsiga for 27.
As a result, Santner finished with four wickets, sealing an impressive second-innings performance.
🔹 New Zealand chase down 8 with ease
With just 8 runs needed, New Zealand began the chase confidently. Conway struck a boundary off Nyamhuri. However, he was bowled trying to finish the game quickly.
Will Young played a maiden over from Williams. But in the next over, Henry Nicholls sealed the win with a crisp boundary.
Thus, New Zealand reached the target at 8/1, wrapping up the Test inside three days. Despite a few fielding errors, their dominant bowling and calm batting secured the result.
