The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) ordered the removal of Azharuddin’s name from the North Pavilion Stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal. This decision followed a petition filed by Lords Cricket Club, questioning the legality of renaming the stand after Azharuddin without proper approval. In response, Justice V Eswaraiah, the HCA’s Ethics Officer and Ombudsman, reviewed the case. He concluded that the renaming lacked necessary ratification and raised concerns about governance and conflicts of interest.

Moreover, the Ombudsman emphasized the importance of transparency in the decision-making process. Thus, he ruled that the action was not in line with standard procedures.

❌ Name Banned from Tickets and Signage

As a result of this ruling, the Ombudsman instructed HCA to ensure that Azharuddin’s name no longer appears on future tickets or signage related to the North Stand. Additionally, the Ombudsman found that, as the former India captain and HCA president, Azharuddin had unilaterally made the decision without approval from the General Body or Apex Council.

“Azharuddin exceeded his authority to benefit himself. Furthermore, the General Body did not ratify this decision, which creates a clear conflict of interest,” Justice Eswaraiah stated.

🏏 VVS Laxman Pavilion Remains the Official Name

In response to the controversy, Lords Cricket Club pushed for the stand’s name to remain as the VVS Laxman Pavilion. They argued that Azharuddin’s action was unauthorized and went against established procedures. Consequently, the Ombudsman agreed with their position. He ruled that the renaming lacked legal backing and as a result, the stand will continue to honor VVS Laxman.

In addition, the Ombudsman clarified that governance protocols were not followed, leading to his final decision.
