England’s managing director, Rob Key, has hinted that Ben Stokes is a strong candidate to lead the ODI team after Jos Buttler’s resignation. England’s disappointing 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign, where they failed to win a single match, has sparked leadership discussions. As a result, the management is now evaluating their best options for the future.

Stokes, 33, has been a key figure in England’s white-ball success. Notably, he played a crucial role in their 2019 World Cup triumph. Though he initially retired from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup, he later made a comeback for the tournament. However, a hamstring injury during the Test series in New Zealand ultimately ruled him out of the Champions Trophy.

Key Praises Stokes’ Leadership

Key highlighted Stokes’ ability to inspire teammates in high-pressure situations. “Ben is one of the best captains I’ve seen. It would be foolish not to consider him,” he said. “Moreover, he’s a great tactician and a leader who lifts players when the pressure is on.”

However, workload concerns remain. Since Stokes already leads England’s Test side, adding ODI captaincy could be challenging. Therefore, Key stressed the importance of finding balance. “We need to consider what this means for him and the team,” he added.

Reuniting Stokes and McCullum?

Brendon McCullum took charge of England’s white-ball teams earlier this year. However, results have been disappointing, with England losing 10 of their 11 limited-overs matches in 2024. Consequently, Key suggested that pairing Stokes with McCullum in ODIs could be beneficial. Furthermore, he pointed out how India relies on Test players in ODIs while reserving T20 specialists for the shortest format.

Harry Brook: A Future Leader?

Key also sees leadership potential in Harry Brook. He believes that having Stokes around could accelerate Brook’s development as a future captain. “Harry would be an outstanding leader. In many cases, extra responsibility brings out the best in a player,” Key noted.

With England struggling in white-ball cricket, the upcoming ODI captaincy decision is more critical than ever. Whether Stokes steps up or another leader emerges, England must rebuild quickly before the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
