Bracewell has joined New Zealand’s squad for the 1st Test against Zimbabwe, stepping in after Glenn Phillips suffered a groin injury during the Major League Cricket final.

Although the experienced all-rounder was initially unavailable due to his stint with Southern Brave in The Hundred, his presence in Zimbabwe as part of the T20I side made the selection both logical and timely.

🔹 Bracewell Fills the Gap Left by Phillips

New Zealand faced a selection void after Phillips’ injury. Since the T20I squad already included a capable replacement, the transition happened smoothly.

Head coach Rob Walter explained the reasoning behind the change:

“Glenn’s injury opened a spot, and Michael is the most fitting option. His all-round value keeps the balance intact. Since he’s match-ready and here, the decision made sense.”

By including Bracewell, the team maintained both its structure and strategy heading into the opening Test.

🔹 Bracewell’s Versatility Adds Balance

The 33-year-old provides both batting strength and spin options in red-ball cricket. Moreover, his ability to adjust quickly between formats offers added flexibility to the team. His first-class record includes over 2000 runs and key wickets.

Bracewell’s experience at the international level further boosts New Zealand’s confidence heading into a potentially tricky tour.

🔹 Short-Term Role Before Returning to The Hundred

After the first match in Bulawayo, Bracewell will head back to the UK to rejoin Southern Brave. The team management will then evaluate whether a replacement is needed for the second Test.

This phased inclusion keeps the selection process flexible and adaptable.
