Gujarat Giants pulled off a thrilling five-wicket win over Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Chasing 178, they sealed victory with three balls to spare. Harleen Deol led the charge with an unbeaten 70 off 49 balls, taking the Giants to second place in the WPL 2025 standings. The win also ended Delhi’s three-match unbeaten run.
Deol Anchors Giants’ Chase
After winning the toss, Gujarat opted to chase in dewy conditions. However, they had a sluggish start, scoring just 38 runs in the PowerPlay. Deol and Beth Mooney struggled to accelerate early on, both striking at just over a run-a-ball.
Momentum shifted in the ninth over when Mooney and Deol attacked Annabel Sutherland, collecting 15 runs. Capitals missed key chances to break the stand. Deol was dropped on 27 by Shafali Verma, survived a run-out chance on 34, and had another reprieve when Sutherland missed a caught-and-bowled opportunity.
Ashleigh Gardner added quick runs, smashing 22 off 13 balls, including two sixes. Deandra Dottin then launched a counterattack, hitting a six off her second ball and scoring 24 off just 10 deliveries.
Despite losing wickets late, Gujarat stayed in control. Kashvee Gautam smashed a crucial six in the penultimate over. Deol then sealed the win with a boundary in the final over.
Lanning’s Heroics Set Up Strong Total
Delhi Capitals got off to a flying start with Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma adding 83 runs for the first wicket. Verma hit a brisk 40 off 27 balls before falling to Meghna Singh.
Lanning continued her fine form, reaching her fifty in 35 balls. She struck 15 fours and a six, keeping DC’s innings on track. Despite losing partners, she kept attacking and looked set for a century. However, she was bowled for 92 in the final over, with DC finishing at 177/5.
Meghna Singh was the standout bowler for Gujarat, taking 3/35. The Giants’ bowlers did well in the death overs to prevent Delhi from crossing 180.
